“...I’m not going to argue this with you again, dammit! I’ve had this discussion with you before, and I’ve tried to be a civilized adult, but you’re just too damn stubborn to listen!”
Gabriel frowned as he closed the front door of the apartment he shared with Desmond, his boyfriend’s angry voice the first thing that reached his ears. He could tell that Desmond was on the phone, and he shrugged off his light jacket, hanging it up on a peg near the door. “Des?” he said softly as he crept down the hall. It had sounded like Desmond’s voice was coming from the bedroom.
Desmond scowled, oblivious to the fact that his boyfriend was behind him. He was standing next to the bedside table with his back to the doorway, the phone to his ear, and he shook his head in anger. “Listen to me, Grandma. You’ve got two options here -- you can just accept the fact that I’m in love with Gabriel and that I’m going to stay in love with him or you can go fuck yourself!”
Gabriel winced at the reverberation of Desmond slamming the phone down into its cradle, effectively ending the call. He watched as Desmond brought his hand up to his face, covering his eyes, and then he swallowed heavily, quickly moving forward as he saw Desmond’s shoulders shake. “Oh, baby,” he whispered softly as his arms wrapped around Desmond, tugging the shorter man back against his chest.
Desmond gasped and froze slightly, and then quickly tried to blink away the tears in his eyes, sniffling a little. “Gabriel! Hey, uh, wow, is that time already?” he said, wincing a little, knowing that he sounded upset.
Gabriel gently turned Desmond around so that they were facing each other, and then he wrapped his arms around his boyfriend properly, hugging him tightly. “It’s okay to cry, Des,” he muttered softly. “I know how much it upsets you about your grandmother.”
Desmond sighed in frustration and leaned into Gabriel’s embrace, pressing his face against his boyfriend’s neck. He sniffled, tears welling up in his eyes again, but they were mostly out of frustration this time. He tried to speak, but the words just came out muffled and unintelligible against Gabriel’s skin.
Gabriel just hugged Desmond close for a moment, running his fingers through his boyfriend’s hair, and he finally turned his head to place a gentle kiss against Desmond’s hair. “You know I can’t understand a word you’re saying, babe,” he muttered quietly.
Desmond sighed and turned his head so that his forehead was resting against Gabriel’s shoulder, leaving his mouth uncovered. “I said that I just don’t understand why she can’t accept it. I mean, yes, okay, so maybe it’s not exactly the plan that she had envisioned in her head for me, but I’m in a happy relationship. I’m in love with a wonderful man who treats me well, who’s kind and courteous and doesn’t beat me or abuse me but genuinely loves me in return. What’s so bad about that?”
Gabriel sighed heavily and shook his head, rubbing his hand over Desmond’s back. “C’mon,” he said softly as he gently moved away and pulled Desmond toward the bed. He sat down, pulling Desmond down with him, and then paused to take off his shoes. Once his socks were pulled off, he scooted back onto the bed and stretched out on his side, motioning for Desmond to join him.
Desmond sighed heavily and laid down on his side, facing Gabriel, and snuggled back into him, sliding an arm around his waist. “I know she’s Catholic and everything, and it goes against her faith, blah blah blah, but you’re Catholic too, and you’re coping with it just fine,” he complained, pressing his cheek against Gabriel’s chest.
“I know, but your grandmother is older and more set in her ways, Des,” Gabriel said softly as he wrapped his arms around his boyfriend and held him close. He looked sheepish for a moment. “I still struggle with it at times.”
Desmond tilted his head up to look at Gabriel, a look of curiosity on his face. “Oh really?”
Gabriel blushed and squirmed a little, nodding. “Yeah. I love you, Desmond. Please don’t think that just because I’m having issues with my religion, it reflects badly on you. I don’t regret us being together.”
Desmond smiled softly and snuggled back into him, sighing softly. “As long as you don’t regret it,” he said quietly.
“I could never regret this, Des,” Gabriel said softly as he cuddled his boyfriend. He smiled softly and placed a gentle kiss against Desmond’s forehead, just offering him the comfort he obviously needed after such a harrowing conversation with his grandmother.
Desmond appreciated it, and it was obvious in the way that he just clung to Gabriel, drinking it in. He actually wasn’t interested in sex to cheer him up for once; the cuddles were doing quite nicely. He relaxed into Gabriel’s embrace, soothed by the rhythmic rubbing of his boyfriend’s hand down his back, and he eventually dozed off.
